National Budget: Eve of the Deadline

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
PROGRAM #10911 12:00 PM PT
National Budget: Eve of the Deadline.
Today, Congress returns with the federal budget deadline looming. Yet, Republican and Democratic leaders remain far from reaching an agreement, and the president refuses to engage in dialogue. If no deal is reached in the coming hours, the government will run out of funds and shut down on October 1. What are the most contentious issues under debate? Why so much antagonism? What would a government shutdown mean? How can it be avoided? What are the political calculations at stake?
Guests: José López Zamora, correspondent, Washington, D.C.; Carmen M. Feliciano, Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, UnidosUS, Washington, D.C.
Recognition of Palestine, Isolation for the U.S.? In a historic shift, a bloc of countries, including key U.S. allies, formally recognized the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly. The decision, backed by a commission denouncing genocide crimes committed in the conflict, leaves the United States and Israel in growing diplomatic isolation. What does this geopolitical turn mean? What role does the U.S. play in this debate? What consequences could it have for U.S. foreign policy and the future of the conflict? Are there real alternatives after two years of war and thousands of deaths?
Guest: Alexander Aviña, Associate Professor, School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ.
