CENSUS 2010 KICKS OFF. The 2010 Census Count is less than 100 days away. This is the national population count that takes place every ten years to determine how federal monies and political offices will be redistributed around the nation. To encourage citizen participation, the U.S. Census Bureau is launching the largest campaign in history. In Los Angeles, most politicians and grassroots leaders joined the effort. Still, some in the community expressed concerns. Ruben Tapia files the story.
ACTIONS FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM. A national coalition is kicking off a week of coordinated actions urging for immigration reform. Through these actions, activists are trying to find support in Congress for an immigration reform bill introduced last month by Rep. Luis Gutierrez. In the U.S. NorthWest, civil rights organizations join this campaign and call for a march to show that immigrants are hard-working and contributing members of U.S. society. Kendra Anderson and Miguel Gaitan, organizers with One America Coalition, give details about this movement in a conversation with Radio Bilingüe’s Samuel Orozco.
LEÑATEROS: INDIAN WORKSHOP. The workshop "Leñateros" is an indigenous editorial house that publishes in Mayan language in San Cristobal de las Casas, in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The publishing house was founded by poet Ambar Past 35 years ago, in an effort to promote creative writing among the most disenfranchised communities. The non-profit organization has distributed books in Spanish, Tsotsil and English, with a focus on works that recreate pre-Hispanic publishing traditions. Raul Silva reports.
