ON NATIONAL LATINO HERITAGE MONTH RADIO BILINGÜE: CELEBRATES 25 YEARS ON THE AIR SPECIAL PROGRAMS Friday, September 16, 12-1 PM PDT LÍNEA ABIERTA: Rolas de Aztlán. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the movimiento campesino, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings releases an anthology of recordings by Chicano movement artists. Entitled Rolas de Aztlán, the album features songs of struggle and hope by Agustín Lira, El Teatro Campesino, Los Alacranes Mojados, José Montoya, Conjunto Aztlán, Los Lobos and other leading Chicano musicians. This holiday program features music from the album and interviews with featured artists. The following programs are an edited version of live concerts and interviews that were recorded and broadcast from the Smithsonian Latino Music Festival in Washington, D.C. Monday, September 19, 6-7 PM PDT Ecos de Borinquen. The best of today’s jíbaro music from Puerto Rico as performed by Ecos de Borinquen in the Latino Music Festival. Hosted by Samuel Orozco, this segment includes interviews with director Miguel Santiago Díaz, young singer Karol Aurora de Jesús Reyes and guiro player Pablo Figueroa Villalobos. Tuesday, September 20, 6-7 PM PDT Los Camperos de Valles. Music from a live concert with Los Camperos de Valles, a trio of world-renowned falsetto virtuosos from the Huasteca region in Mexico, alternates with interviews with musicians Gregorio Solano, Joel Monroy and Marcos Hernández. Wednesday, September 21, 6-7 PM PDT Sones de México. Based in Chicago, this six-member ensemble plays regional Mexican music with contemporary influences. This one-hour segment includes music from a concert recorded live and an interview with director Juan Díez, director, and Daniel Sheehy, curator of the festival. Thursday, September 22, 6-7 PM Los Pleneros de la 21. Hosted by Wanda Colón Cortés, this program includes music from a live concert by Los Pleneros de la 21, group that has been performing Afro-Puerto Rican music (bomba and plena) for 25 years in New York. It also features interviews with director Juan Gutiérrez and curator Daniel Sheehy. Saturday, September 24, 6-7 PM PDT Eliseo y su Chanchona Melódica Oriental. Music from the rural areas of Eastern El Salvador as performed by Eliseo y su Chanchona. Wanda Colón Cortés also interviews director Eliseo Gutiérrez and curator Daniel Sheehy. Saturday, September 24, 7-8 PM PDT JCJ Band. JCJ Band, a dance band with a repertoire of Dominican merengue rhythms, performs at the Latino Music Festival. Host Wanda Colón Cortés interviews the group’s director Camilo Toledo and curator Daniel Sheehy. |
