Línea Abierta is pleased to celebrate National Latino Heritage Month with a special broadcast from the Rio Grande Valley, home of the annual Narciso Martínez Conjunto Festival and one of the best musical traditions in the country.  In its 15th edition, the San Benito-based festival features three days of soulful South Texas accordion music.

This year, the festival includes Conjunto legends such as Los Donneños, an authentic traditional conjunto and one of the first to crossover into Mexico; Eva Ybarra, one of the best accordion virtuosos today; Amadeo Flores, pioneer of the diatonic accordion; Los Fantasmas del Valle, a group from Mercedes, TX, formed in 1968; Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs, stars of Tejano music; Conjunto Aztlán, musicians of the Movimiento Chicano; veteran Eddie Lalo Torres, co-founder of legendary Los Pavo Reales; Bene Medina y su Conjunto Aguila; Oscar Hernandez, Enrique Vela, and more.

The programs will be hosted in Spanish by Radio Bilingüe’s Alma Garza, popular host of the weekly Onda Tejana, a satellite-distributed program showcasing the best of Conjunto music; and El Paso’s Carlos Spector Calderón, host of the weekly Línea Abierta – Edición Texas, a call-in program with voices from Texas broadcasting in 56 stations in the U.S. and Mexico. They will interview leading performers and feature music from the concerts.

The holiday specials will be aired live, via satellite and webcast, every day prior to the concert, according to the following schedule:

Friday, September 15th, 2 PM CT (12 noon PT).
Saturday, September 16th, 2 PM CT (12 noon PT).
Sunday, September 17th, 2 PM CT (12 noon PT) (TBC).

With this special broadcast from the Rio Grande valley, Radio Bilingüe culminates a two-year public radio series that addressed key issues relevant to Spanish-speaking audiences of the Texas borderlands. Línea Abierta, the talk show series, was delivered to Texan Mexican audiences through the powerful signal of partner station XERF-AM, an Instituto Mexicano de la Radio station in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.

Línea Abierta is the first and only Spanish-language talk show in the U.S. public radio system. Heard on 56 stations in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico, the eleven-year-old call-in series is a production of Radio Bilingüe, the Latino public radio network with main offices in Fresno and San Francisco. In addition to its satellite service, the network distributes news, information and musical programming online. The webcast service is available 24/7 at www.radiobilingue.org.

The 15th Annual Narciso Martínez Conjunto Festival is sponsored by the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center.

Funding for this special broadcast and Línea Abierta – Edición Texas is provided in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
