The California Report

The Latino Vote is a radio series co-produced by KQED in San Francisco and Radio Bilingüe in Fresno, CA. Aired on KQED's The California Report news magazine and Satelite Radio Bilingüe, the series brings together news stories that explore the concerns and aspirations of Latino voters, who could help determine the outcome of critical elections this year. This project is part of Radio Bilingüe's "Hacia el Voto 2008," a special election coverage funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The Latino Vote, Part 6: School Board Elections
When a racial or ethnic group feels systematically shut out of local politics, they often turn to lawsuits to help pry open the doors of government. Last month, a judge in Madera County, California took the unusual step of stopping a local school board election before it was held. He said at-large elections put Latino candidates for the school board at a disadvantage -- a violation of the California Voting Rights Act. As part of our series on the Latino Vote, KQED’s Scott Shafer talks with Robert Rubin, legal director at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. He filed the suit that caused the ruling.

The Latino Vote, Part 4: Watsonville's Latino Leaders
Latino voters are expected to play a major role in the outcome of the 2008 election, but for many years Latinos in California felt shut out of local politics and government. That began to change 20 years ago when a voting rights case forced the town of Watsonville to elect city council members by districts. Scott Shafer returns to Watsonville to see how things have changed in the last two decades.
