THE CANDIDATES. In the past two weeks, the Democrats made history nominating the first Black presidential candidate. On the Republican side, Sarah Palin became the first female vice presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party. How do Latinos and Latinas connect with the candidates and their messages? What's the change the candidates are talking about? IMMIGRATION EDITION - INTERPRETER QUESTIONS PROCEEDINGS. Attorney Rosalba Piña, an immigration law expert, joins this edition from Chicago to interview professor Erik Camayd-Freixas, of Florida International University in Miami. Profr. Camayd-Freixas is a certified interpreter who broke the code of confidentiality and spoke up for migrants after he was called to translate in hearings for about 400 meatpacking workers detained in a federal raid in Iowa. She also answers listener questions about the dos and don'ts when applying for residence and naturalization.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10.

PROGRAM # 5551.  12:00 PDT.

MISSISSIPI: THE LARGEST RAID. Caos and fear in Laurel, Miss., is the aftermath of the largest immigration raid on a workplace in the United States. 595 immigrant workers were arrested by federal officials and some face criminal charges for using improper Social Security numbers or false address. Many are imprisoned in a detention center in Jena, LA.

Guest: Victoria Cintra, Director, Mississipi Immigrant Rights Alliance, Gulfport, MS, joining from Jena, LA. www.yourmira.org.

ALSO, "TOUR OF THE FAITHFUL." A group of national religious leaders are kicking off a month-long tour around the nation to rally faith communities against xenophobia, nativism and apathy. Calling it the "Tour of the Faithful," the faith leaders also say immigration reform is "The Elephant in the Room" of the presidential elections, and urge the federal government to stop deportation raids in order to preserve the traditional value of family unity.

Guest: Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, President, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Sacramento, CA.

ALSO, MEXICAN-AMERICANS DENIED CITIZEN PASSPORTS. The U.S. State Department denies passports to Mexican American citizens when their births were attended by midwives. Civil-liberties groups say these refusals take place without a fair examination of their cases, they say these procedures are against the Constitution, and are taking the State Department to court in Texas.

Guest: Lisa Brodyaga, Attorney, Refugio del Rio Grande, San Benito, TX, passport@aclu.org.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11.

PROGRAM # 5552.  12:00 PDT.

9/11: A CITIZEN PROBE. Questioning the depth of the probe of the original 9/11 commission, actor and activist Ed Asner, former Dallas Cowboy Mark Stepnoski and hip hop group Arrested Development are leading a petition drive to get a referendum on New York City's November ballot to conduct a new 9/11 investigation. The initiative calls for the City Council to designate an investigative panel with subpoena authority. On the seventh anniversary of the tragedy, this program reports on that citizen effort.
