MONDAY, AUGUST 4.

AIDS 2008. In coincidence with the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, this roundtable discusses the severity of the HIV epidemic among Latinos in the U.S. and Mexico. AIDS cases are increasing among Latinos in major U.S. cities at some of the worst rates in the world. Experts on both sides of the border announce campaigns to combat homophobia and measures targeting Latinos and Mexicans to stem the HIV infection on both countries. Issues explored include the link between deportation and HIV, a revised estimate for HIV incidence finding more people infected by the virus, the HIV crisis among Dominicans, and poor access of pregnant mothers and children in Mexico to HIV treatment.

THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES: THE GREEN TICKET. The Green Party recently held its political convention and nominated two women of color for the presidential ticket. Cynthia McKinney, a former member of the House of Representatives, is running for President and community organizer Rosa Clemente was selected as her running mate. This program, part of the series "Hacia el Voto 2008," features excerpts from McKinney's acceptance speech and interviews with leading Green Party members.

TRANS FAT BANNED IN CALIFORNIA. California became the first U.S. state to prohibit trans fat in restaurants and food facilities. New York City and Philadelphia have passed laws banning the artery-clogging fats used in fried foods and margarine. How much would this ban help protect Californians against heart disease? How are chefs and eateries in the barrio receiving the news? The author of the legislation, health experts, and restaurant owners join this program.

UNLOCKING THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. Promoters of parent involvement in public schools give practical information on how to learn key facts about their children's high schools and how to initiate campaigns to bring equity and equality to their schools. The program also includes analysis on useful components of the No Child Left Behind Law and the mood of voters in the nation about spending on schools. This program is part of the series Diploma en Mano.

PUERTO RICO EDITION. In this pre-taped edition from San Juan, PR, WRTU’s Wanda Colón Cortés, brings news and analysis on major developments in the Caribbean basin.
