CANDIDATES AT GATHERING OF JOURNALISTS OF COLOR. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have been invited to appear at the UNITY: Journalists of Color convention in Chicago, perhaps the largest convention of journalists in the world.  Obama has confirmed, in what is described as his first national appearance after returning from his international trip. Leading journalists are being invited to comment on these developments.

 

ALSO, CALIFORNIA REDISTRICTING INITIATIVE. National civil rights organizations have announced their opposition to a ballot initiative in California that would create a citizens commission to redraw legislative districts. The initiative, known as "the Voters First Act," has qualified for the ballot in November. A leading civil rights advocate explains the grounds for their opposition.

TUESDAY, JULY 29.

IMMIGRATION EDITION – IOWA WORKSITE RAIDS - Attorney Rosalba Piña, an immigration law expert, joins this edition from Chicago to focus on a congressional probe on recent federal raids in Iowa, the largest ever worksite raids. Piña also answers listener questions about the dos and don'ts when applying for residence and naturalization.

HOUSING CRISIS BILL. A bill designed to tackle the worst housing crisis since the Great Depression was signed into law by President Bush. The legislative package would revamp mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, help local governments to deal with foreclosed properties, and assist hundreds of thousands of home owners to avoid foreclosure. Experts discuss the details and ramifications of this package.

THE REPATRIATED. Thousands of Mexican émigrés are being forced to repatriate to their homeland as a result of the increasingly punitive laws and border enforcement in the U.S. Recently, U.S. authorities started flying undocumented migrants to Mexico City and Guadalajara under a controversial repatriation program. These mass repatriations have placed new demands for housing, jobs, schools and health services in the migrant home communities. How are these sudden repatriations impacting the mental and physical health of children? What community-based resources are available to these families? How are government agencies responding to ensure a safe repatriation?
