ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS. Four Latin American grassroots environmentalists were recent recipients of the Goldman Award, the world's largest environmental prize. Ecuadorians Luis Yanza and Pablo Fajardo are leading an unprecedented community-driven legal battle against global oil giant Chevron. Jesús León Santos was honored for leading a farmer-led organization in the highlands of Southern Mexico, that uses ancient agricultural practices to transform eroded areas into rich, arable land. Rosa Hilda Ramos was recognized for convincing U.S. authorities to direct millions of dollars in pollution fines to establish long term protection of the Las Cucharillas Marsh in Puerto Rico. STUDENT LOAN 'REDLINING'. As tuition fees rise and more students are forced into debt to pay for their education, the student loan industry faces increased examination. Still, the federal government has no system in place to find misconduct by lenders and protect student borrowers. Calling the problem similar to redlining and predatory lending found in the home mortgage market, New York State is leading the charge in the nation to bring corrective action. Recently, the state passed a new law known as the Student Lending Accountability, Transparency And Enforcement Act.

FEDERAL, LOCAL CLASH ON ICE RAIDS. As federal immigration raids sweep the country, more and more local and state officials are speaking out against them. Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called on Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to stop work-site raids that are having "severe and long-lasting effects" on "established, responsible employers". California Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez (D-Los Angeles) and a group of legislators have urged Chertoff to stop raids because of concerns about violations of constitutional rights. Meanwhile, in Arizona, Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon has called on the US Attorney General's office to investigate suspected racial profiling and civil rights violations committed by Maricopa County Sheriff during recent stop, search and arrest operations.

With issues such as mass deportation raids, family separation, and the building of a border wall still worrying millions of families, pro-immigrant groups are calling for a third season of rallies in support of immigration reform on May Day. This time, the rallies take place amid heated presidential campaigns. News correspondents and citizen journalists file reports on the developing events around the nation.
