  WEDNESDAY, JULY 7.

PROGRAM # 6153   12:00 PM PST

HELP FOR THE UNEMPLOYED. Unemployment fell in June, but not enough to signify true economic recovery. More than 130,000 jobs are needed every month, just to keep up with the growing labor force. The House of Representatives recently passed a bill to extend federal benefits for the unemployed. So far, Republicans have blocked such a measure in the Senate. This edition brings together the voices of the unemployed and experts in the field.

Guests: Hilda Solís, Secretary of Labor, Department of Labor, Washington, DC, www.dol.gov ; Eric Griego, State Senator, New Mexico Legislature, Albuquerque, NM, http://legis.state.nm.us; Catherine Singley; Policy Analyst, Economic and Employment Policy Project, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Washington, D.C., www.nclr.org

THURSDAY, JULY 8.

PROGRAM # 6154    12:00 PM PST

TAKE OUR JOBS. As unemployment and the economic crisis stoke anti-immigrant sentiments, the United Farm Workers invite all those who feel that undocumented workers are taking jobs that should go to American citizens to apply online and join the exciting field of manual farm labor.

Guest: Diana Tellefson, Executive Director, United Farm Workers Foundation, Los Angeles, CA, www.ufw.org; www.takeourjobs.org.

ALSO, LATINO FARMERS SUE GOVERNMENT. A decades-old farm loan program to help small farmers stay afloat allegedly discouraged African-American and Latino farmers from applying or rejected their applications, even as Anglo peers received loans with no problem. The Department of Justice has now announced they will pay $2 billion dollars to African-American farmers who filed claims against the USDA, while they plan to pay Latino and women farmers a little more than $1 billion. Latino farmers say this is unfair.

Guests: Modesta Salazar, Farmer, Pearsall, TX; Collette Harrell, Attorney, Howrey LLP, Washington, DC.
