Payday Loans; New Mexico Community Seeks a Way out of Economic Crisis; Latino Doctors Help Out in Haiti.

PAYDAY LOANS – Every year millions of workers all over the country pay extremely high interest to companies that offer payday loans. Recently, the House of Representatives passed legislation that would protect consumers against this kind of abusive loans. The Senate is discussing a similar bill. Farida Jhabvala Romero visited the Latino Mission neighborhood in San Francisco where payday loan businesses can be found on every corner.

NEW MEXICO COMMUNITY SEEKS A WAY OUT OF ECONOMIC CRISIS – The small community of Anthony is right on the border between Texas and New Mexico, and that border marks a big difference. The Texas side has been an official city for more than 50 years, while on the New Mexico side, the community is unincorporated and lacks many public services. Residents just voted to make their community a city, in order to receive money from the federal stimulus package. Mónica Ortiz Uribe reports.

LATINO DOCTORS HELP OUT IN HAITI – The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti could reach 150,000 in the coming weeks. Members of humanitarian organizations around the world have traveled to the Caribbean country to distribute food and water, and offer medical attention. Some Latino doctors from the United States are among those helping the Haitian people. Dolores M. Bernal reports from Port-au-Prince.
