Financial Bailout approved, 40 years after 1968, and Cesar Castro: Young Jaranero
FINANCIAL BAILOUT APPROVED – In a second vote this Friday, the House of Representatives passed the financial bailout plan requested by the Bush administration. The U.S. Senate approved the legislation two days before, after making changes to win the vote of reluctant legislators in both houses of Congress. The current plan will cost taxpayers nearly 800 billion dollars. The discontent and distrust of the American people became evident soon after. Patricia Guadalupe reports from the nation’s capital.

40 YEARS AFTER 1968 – This October 2 was the 40th anniversary of the repression of the Mexican student movement, which caused the death of several hundred young people, women, elderly, and chidren in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Mexico City. In commemoration of that tragic and rebellious momento of Mexican history, we offer the testimony of several protagonists of the movement. Raúl Silva compiled the testimony of several young activists from ’68: Roberta Escudero “La Tita”, Martha Acosta, Óscar Menéndez and Elvira López, with music by Judith Reyes.

CESAR CASTRO: YOUNG JARANERO – The musical tradition of Veracruz has long put down roots in California, especially in Los Angeles, where each year a Gathering of Jaraneros is held. In the El Sereno neighborhood, in East Los Angeles, a young musician from Veracruz offers his knowledge to the community, so that the musical tradition of son jarocho will survive and thrive. Betto Arcos reports from Los Angeles.
