SUSPICION OF VOLUNTARY DEPORTATIONS – A new program launched by immigration authorities, called “Voluntary Removal” calls for undocumented immigrants with deportation orders to turn themselves in to authorities. The program is already in place in five cities in the United States, but activists, lawyers, and immigrants say the harsh sanctions and lack of incentives make it less than attractive. CONTROLLING PORT POLLUTION – An environmental proposal that would help reduce pollution generated by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is trapped in the middle of a harsh budget dispute between the California Legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger. Environmental groups and residents affected by the pollution are pressuring the governor to sign the bill. Rubén Tapia is following the discussion from the port areas of Los Angeles.

In 2007 alone, foreign tourism generated more than 12 billion dollars of revenue in that country. But this year, the economic crisis in the United States is worrying residents of many communities that depend on foreign money.
