5 million to register Latino voters, Battle over water returns to California, and Two Guelaguetzas.

5 MILLION TO REGISTER LATINO VOTERS – Community organizations are launching an intense 5 million dollar campaign to mobilize new Latino voters. The organizers are optimistic after the increase in registered voters for the primary elections earlier this year. A city councilman in Texas owes his position to this surge in Latino votes, a vote the presidential candidates also need in order to win this November. Rubén Tapia reports from Los Angeles, where the campaign headquarters are located.

BATTLE OVER WATER RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA - California is undergoing one of the worst droughts in history, and even less rain is predicted for this year. The state government declared California in a state of drought, but farmers, farm workers, and environmentalists are demanding more official action to change the way in which water is managed in the region. This week farmers and local authorities from the Central Valley, the agricultural heart of the nation, called for action from the federal government. Zaidee Stavely has the story.

TWO GUELAGUETZAS – With one official Guelaguetza festival and another grassroots one, Oaxaca celebrates its festive demonstration of dances and cultural diversity. In the midst of police blockades and isolated protests, this situation shows another face of the confrontation between Governor Ulises Ruiz and some of his opponents, such as the teachers’ union. Vladimir Flores reports from Oaxaca City.
