Obama and McCain court Latino vote in AZ, Raids victims speak out at public hearings, and Mexico defends tomato exports

OBAMA AND MCCAIN COURT LATINO VOTE IN AZ

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has pocketed the support of his native Arizona for the November election. But Obama supporters are far from giving up on the state’s voters. Obamistas are betting on the Latino vote to help them close the broad lead McCain holds in the region. As Elvia Diaz reports, the Latino vote grows in relevance as diverse groups expand efforts to drive record numbers of Latino voters to the polls.

RAIDS VICTIMS SPEAK OUT AT PUBLIC HEARINGS

Immigration raids victims testified this week at a public hearing in Los Angeles. Children, women and men took the podium in front of hundreds of people to talk about the verbal and emotional abuse they said to have suffered under the custody of immigration officers. They denounced the lack of legal representation and the uncertainty of appealing deportations. This was the fifth hearing of its kind in the country, which organizers hope would help build public pressure in Washington in favor of a humane and just immigration reform. Ruben Tapia attended the hearing in Los Angeles.

MEXICO DEFENDS TOMATO EXPORTS

After the U.S. closed its borders to Mexican tomatoes saying they are tainted with salmonella, the Mexican government said it would defend its tomato exports at all cost. Mexican authorities declared that after they prove their tomatoes are safe they expect the ban to be lifted, or they will go to international bodies to argue that the U.S. is violating trade exports. Citlali Saenz shares details.
