Democratic Race Ends, Farm Workers Protest Death of Pregnant Teen, and Jarana Teacher.

DEMOCRATIC RACE ENDS – Democrats are trying to unify their party this week with the announcement that Senator Clinton will suspend her campaign. Her rival, Senator Barack Obama, declared himself the Democratic nominee after gathering the number of delegates required by his party. But there is still resentment among followers of both candidates, and some insist that Obama has to maintain Clinton as a strong ally. Patricia Guadalupe is following the presidential race from Washington.

FARM WORKERS PROTEST DEATH OF PREGNANT TEEN – A group of farm workers walked 50 miles carrying two wooden coffins to the capital city of California this week. Their journey began near the vineyards of Lodi, California, where a seventeen year old farm worker died a few days ago because of the high temperatures. As KQED’s Sasha Khokha reports, her death has sparked questions about the effectiveness of regulations to prevent heat stroke in California fields.

JARANA TEACHER - Jorge Mijangos is a master Veracruz jarana player who has moved his art to California. Mijangos is beginning to build a tradition in the art of playing the string instrument that identifies the traditional son jarocho music, as well as the art of making jaranas, known as luthiery. Mijangos is a luthier by heart, and he hopes to leave his mark on this art on this side of the border. Our correspondent Rubén Tapia visited Mijangos’ classes and his workshop in Southern California.
