Congressional Oversight of Immigration Raids, Subsidies for the Poor, and Milennarian Asian Heritage in California.

CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT OF IMMIGRATION RAIDS – The U.S. Congress is organizing hearings on immigration operations and the jails where detainees are held. This, after a growing number of reports of mistreatment of immigrants during immigration operations. Civil rights groups are asking legislators to go beyond the hearings and monitor the Department of Homeland Security’s operations more closely. Patricia Guadalupe has more from the nation’s capital.

SUBSIDIES FOR THE POOR –Felipe Calderón’s government launched a program in Mexico to help the poorest families to alleviate the effects of the international food crisis. The plan will give 120 pesos, around 11 dollars a month, to 26 million Mexicans from the most marginalized families. The plan also contemplates the duty-free importation of some grains like corn, rice and wheat. Some complain that the plan would leave out millions of middle class families. Citlali Sáenz reports from Mexico City.

MILENNARIAN ASIAN HERITAGE IN CALIFORNIA - Bounseung Synanonh is a master of Oriental music. Born in Laos, Bounseung is a virtuoso of the khene, a wind instrument made of bamboo, and he keeps his music alive in the United States by offering concerts and teaching his ancestral art. With the help of his student Monty Bouasone, he is currently creating an Internet page to offer his knowledge to the world. The following story, prepared by Raúl Silva, brings us closer to the tradition of a millenarian culture, which has found possibilities of permanence in the United States.
