New mobile platforms make Radio Bilingüe available ‘anywhere, anytime’

Radio Bilingüe continues its technology leadership role in public radio with new mobile applications that allow listeners to tune in from anywhere in the world, at any time.

The community-based radio network has expanded its media platforms to include such applications as Public Radio Tuner and iTunes for complete access to its audio stream.

Listeners can now tune into the network’s news service -- Noticiero Latino and Edición Semanaria de Noticiero Latino -- on a timely basis convenient for them, said Samuel Orozco, executive producer.

“This mobile media technology allows Radio Bilingüe to expand its service to new audiences,” Orozco said. “Users will be able to tune in to Radio Bilingüe’s audio stream and audio on demand anyplace, anytime.”

Noticiero Latino and Edición Semanaria, along with Radio Bilingüe’s flagship talk show Línea Abierta, are distributed by Satélite Radio Bilingüe, a satellite-distribution system owned and operated by Radio Bilingüe, Inc.

The network is using Public Radio Tuner to distribute its webcast and iTunes for the audio-on-demand files of the news services. In addition, Radio Bilingüe’s webcast is available on portable phones or devices that have access to mobile broadband technology.

Public Radio Tuner is a free application that provides fast, live access to high-quality radio programming on hundreds of public radio stations from anywhere in the country. iPhone or iPod Touch users can freely download the application and listen to streams from stations across the country. The project was developed by Public Radio Exchange (PRX) and supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The other application, iTunes, the carrier of Radio Bilingüe’s audio-on-demand services, is a popular jukebox software that allows users to tune in, store and play programs through portable devices such as cellular phones.

A third choice that allows listeners to tune in to Radio Bilingüe from anyplace in the world is mobile broadband, a technology that provides high-speed Internet access from cellular phones, notebooks and other portable devices.

Radio Bilingüe’s live programming can be found by visiting the network’s homepage at www.radiobilingue.org. Other online platforms include: webcast, podcast, audio on demand archives and blogs.
