Technology & Equipment

The public radio satelite system has three main technical components: uplinks, downlinks, and satelite channels.

Uplinks
The uplinks are owned individually by public radio stations, which operate in common agreement with NPR Distribution Department.

Downlinks
The public radio satellite system interconnects more than 300 satellite receiving earth terminals, which are owned and operated by individual stations.

The Satellite
The satellite transponder used by public radio is divided into twelve dedicated channels for program distribution. In addition, the system leases "full-time" service channels outside the basic 1-12 to public radio and commercial customers. These channels are not enhanced with any support services. Satélite Radio Bilingüe has leased four "full-time" channels within this unenhanced system.

MOTC
The Main Origination Technical Center is located at NPR headquarters in Washington, DC. It is the main center for the public radio satellite system and operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
