ORGANIZED FARM WORKERS CONVENTION. The United Farm Workers of America is holding its 15th Constitutional Convention this year in Fresno, CA. The union, founded by Cesar Chávez and led by Arturo Rodríguez, is currently battling in the strawberry fields of California, is calling for pesticide control, and is expected to endorse key candidates for the November elections. The gathering takes place on the heels of the declaration of the César Chávez holiday in California. This is a special two-hour, gavel-to-gavel live broadcast.

PROGRAM # 2414 - HEALTH EDITION - DR. ELMER HUERTA. A regular commentator, Dr. Elmer Huerta brings news developments in the medical science field. He also answers questions from listeners on health and wellness. On occasion of Labor Day, this pre-recorded edition focuses on occupational health. Workers moving repetitively their hands (in computers, assembly lines or packing houses), face a number of ailments, including carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Few Latino workers report their disabilities. This program provides advice on what to do to prevent workplace injuries.

PROGRAM # 2518 - ROSARIO IBARRA DE PIEDRA. This is a live conversation with tireless Mexican human rights advocate Rosario Ibarra de Piedra. Mrs. Piedra is the leader of Comité Eureka, an organization for the rights of political prisoners, exiles and disappeared dissidents. She is the mother of Jesús Piedra, a young activist who "disappeared" in 1975. She ran for president in 1994. Mrs. Piedra talks about the feasibility of a Truth Commission and prosecuting crimes against humanity under the new administration. She also talks about a newly-passed law in Mexico City, making forced disappearances of persons a crime.

PROGRAM # 2519 - BILINGUAL EDUCATION. Recent Standardized Test Scores in California seem to show that immigrant students are doing better in most subjects, two years after bilingual education programs were barred. These results are fueling anti-bilingualism movements in Arizona, Colorado, Massachussetts and New York. In Arizona, voters will decide in November the future of bilingual education programs, after a measure similar to the one in California qualified for the ballot. This program features a debate on the issue.

This is a group of Central American musicians who sing ballads about raids by la migra and rancheras about their homelands. The group usually performs at political rallies, sweet-fifteen parties and street corners. They are releasing their first CD ("Canciones sin Fronteras") this month. This is a special Latino Heritage Month program.

PROGRAM # 2424 - HEALTH EDITION - HEALTHY HOMES. This is a two-hour live broadcast from the site of the Agricultural Worker Health, Housing and Empowerment Conference in Sacramento. Guests talk about how housing conditions shape the health of farm worker families. They also discuss efforts to provide housing for seasonal field workers and low-income rural residents, common injuries in the fields, regulating transportation in the roads to the fields, and immigration barriers to health care and housing.

Aridjis comments on the recent sentencing of two environmentalist farmers in the state of Guerrero. In what is widely seen as a politically-motivated case, the activist farmers are being charged with possession of guns and drug trafficking activities.

PROGRAM # 2527 - PRO-VOUCHERS INITIATIVE. A school initiative in California proposes to take millions from public schools and provide them to parents. Parents would then use these vouchers to choose the preferred school for their children. Proponents claim Proposition 38 will bring a new renaissance to education in California. Opponents respond that this initiative will abandon the public school system and its students, in favor of private schools.

PROGRAM # 2528 - ANCESTRAL COOKING RECIPES. Mexican cuisine, along with French and Chinese cuisine, is among the most diverse and renown in the world. In this program, anthropologists, writers and experts talk about the nutritional values and the cultural wonders of the Indian, Mestizo and African cooking in Mexico. They comment on recipes recently published in a collection of fifty books on the cuisine of deep Mexico.

ALSO, SUSANA BACA. Known as "The Soul of Black Peru," singer-dancer- teacher Susana Baca speaks about her efforts to restore the African musical roots in the coastal lands of her native Peru. Baca is cofounder of the Instituto Negrocontinuo (Black Continuum) in Lima. This is part of a pre-recorded conversation.
