TUBERCULOSIS. Among the diseases that threaten migrant workers on their travels north is tuberculosis. Baja California has the highest number of TB cases in Mexico and the Mexican border is among the riskiest areas in the U.S. Health service providers in San Diego talk about their efforts to promote access to free medication and continue treatment for migrants as they move from valley to valley.

HUMAN RIGHTS CRIMES VERDICT. A Florida jury found a former Chilean army lieutenant liable for crimes against humanity, cruelty, torture, and extra-judicial killing, in the execution 30 years ago of economist Winston Cabello. The jury ordered Armando Fernández Larios to pay the Cabello family four million dollars in the first U.S. trial linked to Gen. Pinochet’s bloody coup. This is an interview with Dr. Zita Cabello, sister of Winston, professor in California and main plaintiff in the lawsuit.

CITIES VS. WAL-MART. The city of Oakland, CA, banned the building of ?big-box? grocery stores that include full-service supermarkets. Officials from Wal-mart, a superstore chain, say the super-centers provide more choices for consumers who want lower prices. Oakland officials say that superstores like Wal-mart destroy mom-and-pop store, cause more traffic jams and air pollution, and depress wages. This is an interview with Ignacio de la Fuente, chair of the Oakland City Council.

ALSO, EVO MORALES. A speech in Mexico City by Evo Morales, a Bolivian Aymara Indian who is considered the most influential grassroots leader behind the public protests that led to the resignation of President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada. Morales speaks about the experience of that citizen revolt against natural gas exports to Mexico and the U.S., and the destruction of traditional coca crops.

ALSO, DIRTY WAR CRIMES VERDICT. Mexico's human rights foremost advocate Rosario Ibarra de Piedra comments on a recent historic decision by Mexico's Supreme Court allowing prosecution of former government officials involved in crimes of the "dirty war" of the 60s and 70s. The court ruled that the statute of limitations has not expired in kidnapping cases where the victim has not been found.

Since 1989, the Mexican government established the Paisano program, a campaign to inform visitors about import regulations and to encourage them to report abuses. Mexican officials give an update on the Paisano plans for this season.

MIGRANTS AND HIV. Concerned about the increasing numbers of migrants infected with HIV, health officials in the Mexican state of Michoacan step up efforts to reach out to paisanos who are visiting for the holiday season. In California, migrant clinics draw attention to the lack of resources to educate farm workers at risk of AIDS infection. Both states struggle to improve public attitudes towards migrants and protected sex. This program discusses access of migrants to preventive help and treatment.
