Some groups are asking immigrants to stop working or attending school. Others to stop shopping. All are calling to take to the streets and protest a congressional bill that would criminalize undocumented immigrants. These historic demonstrations are expected to draw millions in support of immigration reform.

This is the second major victory for janitors in the South, following one in Houston last year. This is an interview with Eliseo Medina, international vicepresident of SEIU.

HEALTH EDITION: MEDICARE DEADLINE.
With a week remaining for seniors to enroll in the new prescription drug benefit under Medicare, a high U.S. official goes on a national tour to raise awareness on the deadline. Meanwhile, a nonpartisan report released this week found that Medicare’s public information was confusing, false or incomplete, triggering new calls from advocates to extend the May 15 deadline.

IMMIGRANT TROUBADEUR. Nazaria Vizcaino, a singer from Oakland and immigrant from central Mexico, is also a composer inspired by the plight and struggles of her immigrant community. More than a decade ago she wrote a ballad on Proposition 187 in California and more recently she expressed the anxieties and anger of her undocumented paisanos in the ballad Corrido de la HR4437. She performs live two of her creations.
JULIAN GONZALEZ, MARIACHERO CAMPESINO. A conversation with Julian Gonzalez, practitioner of the traditional mariachi music and mentor to new generations in the genres of son abajeño and canción ranchera. RAISING HEALTHY KIDS. The longer a Latino child has lived in the U.S, the more likely she or he will be overweight. This is one of the conclusions in Lourdes Alcañiz’ latest book “Gordito Doesn’t Mean Healthy,” where she highlights traditional Latino diets heavy on jícamas, papayas and corn tortillas over “eating American.” In addition, Dr. América Bracho, a nutritional expert from Los Angeles, joins this conversation to provide practical advise to combat obesity and choose healthy foods. This program is in conjunction with KQED, San Francisco’s public radio.

SKYROCKETING GAS PRICES. The gallon of gas rose to the mid-$3 range and the price continues going up. This is hurting the pocketbooks of consumers. Are motorists changing routines as a result? THE MURDER OF MOISES CRUZ. Oaxacan migrant leader Moisés Cruz was shot to death in his native village in Oaxaca. Civic groups denounce this crime as a political assassination and hold the state government responsible. Cruz was a long time leader of migrant workers in California and Oaxaca.

Mexican émigrés began mailing the first absentee ballots to vote in Mexico’s July 2nd presidential election. This is a report on the glitches of the absentee voting process.
