WOMEN CHECK UPS. Health organizations around the nation call for a national women’s check-up day on May 10, in celebration of National Women’s Health Week. Screenings for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, leading causes of death among women, are among the activities. Leaders of national organizations talk about initiatives to pass legislation for Latina women and efforts to reach out to uninsured Latinas. How to choose a Medicare-approved drug discount card and how to prevent fraud was also a topic of conversation on the first day these cards are offered for enrollment.

HIDDEN CASUALTIES OF THE WAR. Latino soldiers tested positive for radiation after returning from the war in Iraq. Doctors suspect they were exposed to depleted uranium, a metal used in U.S. shells and tanks. Congress members also comment on these consequences of the war and measures to provide medical care for these veterans.

CARING MOTHERS. In commemoration of Mother’s Day and National Women’s Health Week, this edition features interviews with three mothers who develop outstanding community work: 

MARÍA ISLAS, a mother of seven children, this farm worker leader has been working full time for the past two years promoting awareness about pesticide risks and field sanitation rules. Maria is a member in Salinas, CA, of the organization Lideres Campesinas. 

 

CARMEN RICHMAN. A mother of three, Carmen became a volunteer community educator on cancer prevention after her husband passed away afflicted with cancer. She used her late husband’s compensation fund to support her family during her years of volunteer service. She represents Mujeres en Accion, a program of Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

 

XÓCHITL CORRAL has actively involved her two teen-age children in her community outreach work. She helps troubled youth and tries to stem the HIV/AIDS epidemics, high blood pressure, and other maladies. Xochitl is a community health promoter for the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission in San Luis Obispo, CA.

THE WAR AND THE HOSPITAL BILL. This program begins with taped and live calls from listeners. They comment on the scandal of the abuse of Iraqui prisoners by U.S. troops, the war in Iraq, and a bill to force hospitals, doctors and nurses to report patients suspected of being undocumented immigrants.

ALSO, MARIA ELENA FORONDA: A GREEN PRIZE WINNER. This is a conversation with Peruvian sociologist Maria Elena Foronda Farro, winner of the 2003 Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest environmental award. Foronda, who was unable to travel to the U.S. last year, was finally recognized in San Francisco for her leading efforts to clean up the toxic waste of the fishmeal industry in Peru's coastal cities.

CONGRESSMAN XAVIER BECERRA. Los Angeles Representative Xavier Becerra gives the Democratic view on a recent vote by the House to extend permanently a tax cut for married couples and to defeat a proposal to raise income taxes for rich taxpayers. 

CARLOS MONSIVAIS. Interviewed in a recent visit to San Francisco, prominent Mexican sociologist, writer and journalist Carlos Monsiváis comments on Mexico’s political crisis, Indian rights and gay marriage.

SMOKING AND POVERTY. Smoking is still the top killer in the U.S. and the second in the world. Tobacco is also linked with poverty. Tobacco users are sicker and less productive and many of the poorest households are known to spend less in food and education when they are addicted to tobacco. With this in mind, the World Health Organization has declared May 31 st World No Tobacco Day. This program focuses on anti-smoking policies such as bans on tobacco advertising, tobacco taxes, smoke-free environments, and the international tobacco control treaty about to be signed by the U.S. This program airs in collaboration with KQED, San Francisco’s public radio.

ALSO, THE LATIN PROJECT. BROWN VS. BOE: 50 YEARS LATER. On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that “separate but equal” schools were illegal. Segregation was ruled unconstitutional. On the 50 th anniversary of this historic case known as Brown versus Board of Education, this program discusses the impact of the landmark decision and the reality of segregation today. The program also include an interview with a community organizer on his ninth day of fasting for educational equity.

LEGAL AID FOR THE RURAL POOR. José Padilla, director of California Rural Legal Assistance, talks about his non-profit agency’s efforts to challenge rural segregation and school discrimination, advocate for field sanitation, and his recent defense against pro-dairy industry congressmen. Padilla is marking 25 years of service with the organization.

ALSO, THE CLEAR ACT AND THE HOSPITAL BILL. The CLEAR Act (Clear Law Enforcement for Criminal Alien Removal) would involve state and local governments and police departments in the work of deporting immigrants. In addition, the House overwhelmingly voted down a bill that would have denied most emergency room services to undocumented patients and required doctors and nurses to report them to the federal authorities.

What can mothers do to nurture boys with a healthier lifestyle and teach them to develop functional relationships that are based on equality and respect? How can mothers help kids say no to violence and abuse?

ASTHMA. Latinos are more likely to live in areas that expose them to asthma-causing triggers, such as waste treatment facilities, landfills, houses with lead-based paint and air-polluted neighborhoods. Latino children with asthma use fewer medications and many end up in the emergency room. This program gives parents advice on how to protect the family from some dangerous triggers and what to do in case of an asthma attack.

VETERAN BENEFITS. On Memorial Day, the holiday to remember those who died in war, this pre-recorded program focuses on the reality faced at home by those who return from the war front. Ricardo Bolaños, one of four brothers who served at once in Vietnam, warns that key veteran benefits are being reduced at a time when are most needed. Also, Fernando Suárez del Solar, father of a U.S. soldier who died in Iraq, questions military recruitment practices in heavily Latino schools. The program also includes the list of names of the 114 Latino soldiers who have lost their lives in the war in Iraq.
