TAX CREDITS FOR FIELD WORKERS HEALTH. Farmers who provide health care coverage to their agricultural workers may be eligible for a tax credit under a bill proposed by assemblyman Marco Antonio Firebaugh in California.

ALSO, TACO BELL. Farm workers from Florida will march for three days from East Los Angeles to the corporate headquarters of fast-food giant Taco Bell in Irvine. The marchers will be joined by farm labor champion Dolores Huerta and artist celebrities in their call for “fair food that respects human rights, not fast-food that exploits human rights.” They are drawing attention to the plight of tomato workers in U.S. fields.

POSTHUMOUS TRIBUTE TO IMMIGRANT SOLDIER. A conversation with congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-LA) on the dedication of the post office in the city of Duarte, CA, to Francisco Martinez Flores, an immigrant soldier who died in the first days of combat in Iraq. Martinez-Flores received post-humous citizenship and, according to Solis, he inspired the legislation that makes it easier for a legal immigrant to get citizenship and family benefits.

ALSO, JANITORS SUE SUPERMARKETS. Charging that they got paid less than minimum wage, hundreds of janitors in California who worked for supermarket chains joined a class-action suit demanding compensation. Lawyers, Latino groups and Mexican authorities are helping trying to locate in Mexico and the U.S. thousands of potential plaintiffs.

HAND WEEDING BAN. A measure to ban all hand-weeding of many crops, recently defeated in the California legislature, is now being considered by the agency in charge of health and safety in the workplace. Labor advocates blame the practice of weeding by hand in a stooped position with breaking the backs of farm workers. Growers oppose the ban, alleging that it would be costly to agriculture and it’s a better alternative to pesticides. Authorities are said to be looking for common ground.

Tuesday, March 16th

IMMIGRATION EDITION. Attorneys Carlos Spector-Calderón and Rosalba Piña comment on a national effort to legislate protective measures for citizen children who face hardships when their parents are deported and forced to take their citizen children with them. Eleven-year-old Stephanie Palomar recently met with U.S. legislators as part of a lobby day on behalf of citizen children. Spector-Calderon also answers listener calls on immigrant rights and citizenship procedures.

Wednesday, March 17th

ILLINOIS PRIMARIES. This program provides news and analysis on the presidential primary election in Illinois. While the presidential nomination of the major national parties is all but decided, the race for an open U.S. Senate seat may have an impact on the balance of power in the nation’s Senate.

GAY WEDDINGS. City governments throughout the country are joining San Francisco in redefining marriage and legalizing same-sex married couples. This program offers a conversation with one of the first gay couples to benefit from San Francisco City Hall’s wedding ceremonies. They comment on why they sought a marriage certificate and how they live the current battle on marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

PUERTO RICO EDITION – SPECIAL PROGRAM. On the eve of the first anniversary of the war in Iraq, Wanda Colón Cortés, the host in WRTU, Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico, and Samuel Orozco, host and executive producer of Línea Abierta, share microphones in this special edition to discuss some effects of the war. Two activist parents join the program to talk about the impact of the war on families of enlisted soldiers and their efforts to bring peace to the region. Fernando Suárez del Solar from San Diego is the grieving father of Jesús, a soldier who died in the first hours of the conflict, and Annabelle Valencia from Tucson is the mother of two children stationed in Iraq.

FIRST FIVE. Californians surveyed by the program First Five California ranked preschool at the top of their priorities. Parents also said that the California government should do more to ensure access to quality preschool for children.

ALSO, TRIQUI LANGUAGE IN U.S. AIRWAVES. Mr. Andrés Cruz, a farm worker and Indian community organizer, is spearheading the launching of a radio program serving Triqui-speaking paisanos from the Oaxacan highlands. The program, aired on Radio Bilingüe’s stations in California, becomes the first radio service for Triqui-speaking audiences in the United States. In this interview, Cruz talks about what drives him to host this community-oriented service.

Wednesday, March 24th

THE GATEKEEPER. The award-winning film The Gatekeeper is the story of Adam Fields, a fictional U.S. Border Patrol agent who moonlights as a right-wing vigilante. Without planning it, Fields ends up in a drug-trafficking maffia. Eventually, his contacts with immigrants helped change his view about himself. This is a conversation with Tijuana-born writer, director, producer and star actor John Carlos Frey.

ALSO, DRIVER'S LICENSES FOR IMMIGRANTS. Immigrant activist Nativo Lopez, president of Mexican American Political Association and Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana, comments on recent developments about Senate Bill 1160, the measure in California to pass a referendum-proof law granting driver's licenses for undocumented motorists.

Thursday, March 25th

PUERTO RICO EDITION – SPECIAL PROGRAM. On the week of the first anniversary of the war in Iraq, Wanda Colón Cortés, the host in WRTU, Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico, and Samuel Orozco, host and executive producer of Línea Abierta, co-host this program in an exclusive interview with Mexican cartoonist Eduardo del Río (a.k.a.) Rius. In his trademark, satiric way to address highly controversial topics, Rius published the book “Osama Tío Sam.” The book blames the U.S. media’s focus on entertainment and profits for the public’s lack of answers on the motives of the 9/11 attacks.

CÉSAR CHÁVEZ CELEBRATIONS. States, cities and community groups around the nation pay tribute this week to the legendary farm worker and civil-rights champion César Chávez. In this holiday program, two of the most important leaders of the farm worker movement reflect on Chávez legacy of social justice. Dolores Huerta, historic farm worker and civil rights leader, and Arturo Rodríguez, president of the United Farm Workers of America, discuss current challenges for farm workers, including health benefits, driver’s licenses, legal status, pesticide regulations and more.

PROGRAM # 4178 - 1:00 PST
WALMART BATTLE. Walmart, the largest company in the world and the largest employer in the U.S. and Mexico, opened the first of 40 super centers planned for California. Some cities have opposed the arrival of Walmart, worried about their low wages and their impact in local economies and finances. Walmart has responded taking the issue to the voters. This pre-taped program features a conversation with community leader, Rev. Altagracia Pérez, of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy. The program is in simulcast with “Nuestra Voz,” KPFK in Los Angeles.

Tuesday, March 30th

PROGRAM # 4179 - 12:00 PST
IMMIGRATION EDITION. The Senate Dream Act, a bill proposing legal status for immigrant students, is picking up support and has a good chance of passing this year, according to analysts. Attorney Carlos Spector-Calderón comments on this issue. Spector-Calderon also answers listener calls on immigrant rights and citizenship procedures.

PROGRAM # 4180 - 12:00 PST
SIMULCAST CALIFORNIA-JALISCO: POR MI JALISCO. Radio Bilingüe and XEJB Radiarte in Guadalajara join in a live connection to talk about efforts in Western Mexico to attract dollars from migrant savings accounts. "Por Mi Jalisco" is the name of a program geared to encourage entrepreneurial émigrés to invest in their hometowns.
