ELENA PONIATOWSKA: "LAS SIETE CABRITAS." Renowned Mexican author and journalist Elena Poniatowska talks about her latest book, "Las Siete Cabritas" ("The Seven Maverick Women," loosely translated). In her book, Poniatowska offers a portrait of seven great women artists: Frida Kahlo, Nahui Olin, Pita Amor, Rosario Castellanos, Maria Izquierdo, Elena Garro and Nellie Campobello. For Poniatowska, they were women who defied conventions, struggled against all odds and faced broad social hostility. This is a program to celebrate International Women's Week.

BRACEROS SUE MEXICO AND THE U.S. Representatives of Mexican Bracero workers who worked in the U.S. fields and railroads during World War II have filed a $5 billion lawsuit in a federal court in Fresno, CA, against the U.S. and Mexican governments. They claim that millions of dollars in a savings fund created with deductions from each worker's paycheck were never reimbursed to the Braceros upon their return to Mexico, as agreed in the binational contract.

Their members include symphony performers, a fiddler champion, a high school student, and a doctoral graduate. Mariachi Mujer 2000 is one of the headliners of Radio Bilingüe's XIX Annual Viva el Mariachi! Festival in Fresno, CA, the longest-running mariachi fest in California.

The group produced the widely-acclaimed CD "Special Friends," which features innovative arrangements of old Caribbean tunes. Born in San Francisco of Nicaraguan parents, Annette has been in professional music for more than 20 years. She has toured with Latino, reggae, classical, pop and jazz artists and has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Tito Puente, The Grateful Dead and many more stars. Her work is profiled in the book "She is a Rebel - A History of Women in Rock and Roll." This program is in celebration of International Women's Week.

CITIZENS TURN POWER PLANT AWAY. Voters in the blue-collar community of South Gate, in Los Angeles, opposed construction of an electricity plant. They were concerned about the power plant's pollution and health risks. The developing company is pulling out of the city. But the community is still to recover from the conflict. While Mayor Raul Moriel and Councilwoman Xochitl Ruvalcaba went on a hunger strike in protest, influential Latino legislators lobbied in favor of the power plant.

MOTHERS OF THE DISAPPEARED. A conversation with Elizabeth Maier, a naturalized Mexican born in New York, about her recent book "Las Madres de los Desaparecidos. Un nuevo mito materno en América Latina?." Maier explores the human-rights movement organized during the 70s by the mothers of activists disappeared in Latin America as part of the governments' "dirty war." Maier says Rosario Ibarra de Piedra in Mexico and other mothers in Latin America became a symbol of tenacity. They also galvanized democratic change and changed the traditional concept of motherhood.

The recent death of Mexican national Roberto Chávez Reséndiz near Tucson while being arrested by a Border Patrol agent brings renewed protests from civil rights advocates. They say border control enforcement is plagued with racial profiling, use of lethal force and disregard for migrant lives. They call for congressional hearings on border control enforcement. The U.S. Civil Rights Commission vows to begin an inquiry. A top INS official and an advocate of serious restrictions to the admission of newcomers respond to the charges. This special program is broadcast in conjunction with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters.

MARIACHI MEXICO DE PEPE VILLA. This pioneering legend was formed in 1948. Mariachi México de Pepe Villa introduced the modern sound of a second trumpet to mariachi music. In 1954, Discos Peerless awarded MMPV a gold record for selling more than one million records with polka hits. Pepe Villa, the founder, died in 1986. His son, Pepe Villa, Jr, continues the tradition as the group's director. Mariachi México de Pepe Villa headlines this year's "Viva el Mariachi!" Festival in Fresno, CA, the longest-running in California.

PRESIDENT FOX VISIT TO CALIFORNIA. Mexico's President Vicente Fox completed a two-day visit to four cities in California, home to the largest Mexican American population. Fox addressed an audience of thousands of Mexican émigrés in the civic center of Fresno, the agricultural capital and home to the largest farm working population in the U.S. He promised renewed efforts to extend the right to vote abroad. This became the first time a Mexican president visits Fresno. This program features segments of the speeches of Fox and Juan Hernandez, Mexico's migrant czar, and comments from people attending the event. These segments were originally part of a special live broadcast.

As part of the state's Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, schools must include instruction on the values of Cesar Chávez and the history of the farm worker movement. Also, this program airs a 25-minute symphony entitled "Cesar Chávez: Gran Hombre de la Tierra." Accompanied by Sacramento's Camelia Symphonic Orchestra, poets José Montoya and Olivia Castellano read texts written originally by the late farm worker hero and published later in Jacques Levy's book "Cesar Chávez: Autobiography of La Causa."
