Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) is introducing legislation that would prohibit states from spending federal law-enforcement grants on local anti-drug task forces unless they adopt laws to prevent people from being convicted of drug offenses based only on uncorroborated testimony of cops or informants. This bill stems from the Dallas sheetrock scandal, a case where dozens of people, mostly Mexican immigrants, went to prison on drug charges. FARMWORKERS SPRAYED, POISONED. Last month, 23 women who were working in a vineyard in Kern County, California, were exposed to chemical poisons sprayed by a pesticide applicator in a neighboring field. They were rushed to the hospital with severe headaches, nausea and dizziness. Farm worker advocates call for prosecuting the application company and for stricter laws against pesticide safety violations. POISONED CHILDREN. Children living on or around the fields often grow up in a toxic environment, exposed to the poisons of pesticides. The United Farm Workers of America, the Natural Resource Defense Council, and other advocacy organizations have filed a lawsuit demanding the U.S. Environment Protection Agency to promote federal laws to protect farm children by designating them as a model population when determining how much pesticides residues children can “safely” be exposed to.
