NUESTRA MÚSICA FESTIVAL - SPECIAL BROADCAST: GRUPO CIMARRÓN. This is a live broadcast from Washington, DC, site of the 2004 Latino music festival, a folklife event sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution. This program features a concert by Grupo Cimarrón. From Bogotá, Colombia, this is an all-star team of masters of the joropo tradition. Playing harps, cuatro, bandola, maracas and acoustic bass, this group performs folk music from the llanos, the plains along the Colombia-Venezuela border.

NUESTRA MÚSICA FESTIVAL - SPECIAL BROADCAST: VIENTO DE AGUA. This is the second live broadcast from the Latino music festival, a week-long gathering of the finest traditional and contemporary Latino musicians in the nation’s capital. This edition features Viento de Agua, a Puerto Rican ensemble based in New York City. They use requinto, barriles de bomba, tumbandero, güiro, maracas, punteador, cuá to showcase the finest bomba and plena musical traditions of Puerto Rico and New York City. They also feature contemporary arrangements of bombas and plenas using piano, horns and bass.

LAND GRANTS VICTORY (REPEAT EDITION). The heirs of Mexican families who settled the San Luis Valley in Colorado in the 1850s won a historic 44-year court battle. A district judge confirmed that nine plaintiff families have historical rights to a 77,000-acre mountain tract owned by a wealthy rancher. Leaders in this landmark case discuss the significance of this court victory for land grant rights claims throughout the Southwest. This program is a repeat.

HAND WEEDING BAN. Farm workers advocates have reached an agreement with the Schwarzenegger administration to ban unnecessary hand weeding in the California fields. Occupational health and safety authorities are now planning to hold public hearings, before the standard for the hand-weeding ban reaches cabinet-level offices at the end of the year. Government officials and advocates comment on the new standards.

GUADALAJARA SIMULCAST: ROADS OPEN FOR MEXICAN TRUCKS. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed Mexican trucks to enter into the U.S. at any time. The ruling upheld decisions made under the North America Free Trade Agreement, rejected the objections of environmental groups and labor unions and handed a victory to the Bush administration. A representative from Western Mexico’s transportation union comment on the U.S. ruling in this simulcast in conjunction with XEJB, Radiarte in Guadalajara.

WORKER COMP NEW BENEFITS. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger pushed an overhaul of the workers’ compensation system pledging to help business owners by reducing insurance rates and injured workers would receive new benefits. In its first enforcement deadline, the reform has cut medical benefits for thousands of injured workers and insurance rates reductions are falling short of expectations. Advocates of injured workers discuss their claims.

The stations are affiliates of the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio, Mexico's public radio network. Dolores Beistegui, executive director of IMER, and Hugo Morales, Radio Bilingue's executive director, send welcoming messages to the new audiences of this binational public radio service.

Tuesday, July 13th

PROGRAM # 4260 - 12:00 PDT
COMMISSIONER MAGDALENA CARRAL. This is a brief interview with Magdalena Carral, national commissioner of Mexico's National Migration Institute. She comments on Mexico's Paisano program, a federal plan to help protect emigres during their vacation travel to their hometowns. She also comments on this season's growing deadly toll for migrants who cross through the border deserts.

AMERICAN DREAM OR PIE IN THE SKY. Sergio Bendixen, a recognized pollster, talks about the findings of a recent survey among Latino individuals about homebuying. Bendixen says that while Latinos do want to buy some day a home, they are not sure they would ever make their dream a reality. Bendixen's survey found a number of misperceptions, misinformation and distrust among Latinos.

NERUDA’S CENTENNIAL. Chilean exiles in the Bay area are commemorating the 100th birthday of the late Nobel Prize poet Pablo Neruda. Political activist, diplomat, and legislator, Neruda is best remembered as a people’s poet. Tenor and guitarist Rafael Manríquez has arranged musical compositions featuring Neruda’s poetry and releases the CD on time for the centennial. He joins this program.

CHAMPIONS OF HEALTH. This is a conversation with Dr. Katherine Flores, recipient of this year's Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award. Raised in a migrant farmworking family in Central California, Dr. Flores completed her medical career in Stanford University. She is being recognized for her efforts to improve quality of care in underserved communities and increasing the number of Latinos in health professions. 

This program also promoted a special edition on anabolic steroids and youth, aired by KQED, San Francisco’s public radio. KQED's program focuses on the risks of those enhaqnce-performance drugs and legislative efforts to regulate use by youngsters.

LATINO VOTERS. A brief conversation with Clarissa Martinez, of the National Council of La Raza in Washington, DC. She speaks about a recent survey among Latino voters to explore questions such as What are the most important issues to the Latino community? Do Latinos feel these issues are being addressed in the 2004 election campaign? Listeners called in to air views on the election and the issues shaping this election season.

PESTICIDE DRIFT PROTECTION BILL. The Pesticide Drift Exposure Response Act, a bill sponsored by California state senator Dean Florez to ensure that victims of pesticide drift poisoning receive proper medical treatment is moving through the legislature. The legislation was crafted in the wake of major pesticide drift incidents that left dozens of farm workers poisoned in Southern California. This program takes a look into the initiative.

HEALTH. This Línea Abierta edition focuses on the plans for health care reform in the Democratic platform. The program also airs hard news and feature reports. In addition, Francisco Huerta joins this edition from Mexico City to provide the view of U.S. elections from the perspective of Mexican civil participants.

THE CONVENTION II. Special, two-hour live coverage of the second evening of the convention. The program includes remarks from keynote speakers, interviews from the floor, and analysis by guest commentators.

IMMIGRATION. Influential Democrats and analysts join this edition of Línea Abierta to discuss the proposals for immigration reform being discussed in the convention. Reporters also file news stories.

PROGRAM # 4274 - 18:00 PDT
THE CONVENTION III. Special, two-hour live coverage of the third evening of the convention. The program includes segments of the address of the vice presidential nominee, reactions from the floor, and analysis by guest commentators. Antonio González, with the Southwest Voter Registration Project, has been invited to join this edition as a special commentator.

Thursday, July 29th

PROGRAM # 4275 - 12:00 PDT
THE WAR. Analysts and Democratic activists give answers on the current war in Iraq and the national security plans. News reporters also provide stories on the convention.

PROGRAM # 4276 - 13:00 PDT
PUERTO RICO EDITION. In this special edition, Wanda Colón Cortés, the host in WRTU, Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico, brings interviews and commentary from the World Social Forum gathering in Quito, Ecuador. This program is in collaboration with ALER.

PROGRAM # 4277 - 18:00 PDT
THE CONVENTION IV. Special, two-hour live coverage of the final evening of the convention. The presidential candidate address and acceptance speech, analysis by commentators, and news from the floor are also part of this program. Pilar Marrero, analyst from KPFK and La Opinión in Los Angeles, gives insights on this political event as a special commentator.

Friday, July 30th
