“PROTECT ARIZONA NOW.” Anti-immigrant activists in Arizona collect signatures to include in November’s election ballot an initiative that would require voters to submit proof of U.S. citizenship, and state and local agencies to ban undocumented immigrants from public services and report undocumented applicants to U.S. authorities. Phoenix-based journalist Elvia Díaz gives details on the movement behind the initiative, named “Protect Arizona Now” by its backers.ALSO, MIGRANT CHAMPION. Farm worker advocate Andrea Cruz, director of the Southeast Georgia Communities Project, was distinguished with a national leadership award by the Advocacy Institute in Washington, DC. From her office in Lyons, GA, Cruz comments on her work on behalf of the fast-growing population of migrant farm workers, targets of hate crimes, discrimination, exploitation and fraud.

SODAS BAN. California approved a law that bans soda sales from elementary and middle schools in an effort to help stem the obesity epidemics, tooth decay and other health problems among the youth. While the law goes into effect until July, some school districts are not waiting idly for the government mandate. This program focuses on schools that are beginning to remove sugary carbonated drinks from vending machines and offering healthier meals for students.

Voters in two states go to the polls this month in the first primaries and caucuses to choose party candidates to the White House. What’s at stake for Latinos? How critical will the Latino vote be?
