HEART DISEASE: THE ABC. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the U.S. This program, the first in a special series, discusses why heart attacks, angina, stroke, high blood pressure and other illnesses are claiming so many lives. Dr. Elmer Huerta, a regular commentator, answers listener questions on angina, stroke and heart irregularities.

MARKETING TOBACCO TO KIDS. Despite promises not to target youth, leading cigarette and tobacco companies continue advertising and promoting tobacco to influence kids to start smoking, youth advocates claim. What tobacco-advertising techniques appeal to kids? What measures are being taken to protect kids from smoking? PRESIDENT BUSH’ IMMIGRATION PROPOSAL. Radio Mexiquense in Toluca, state of Mexico, discusses Mexican views on President Bush’ pitch in favor of temporary worker permits for the millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Radio Mexiquense features interviews with Mexican scholars, including Dr. Jose Luis Valdez and Dr. Elaine Levine, from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico's Centro de Investigaciones sobre America del Norte; and Felipe Gonzalez from Colegio Mexiquense in Toluca. An interview with Mexican Senator Silvia Hernandez was also featured. Radio Bilingue aired comments from listeners and an interview with Eduardo Aguirre Jr., Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security.

In response, advocates push for public policies that promote physical activity and help communities and young students to maintain a healthy weight. In this program, a patient describes how she takes care of herself; the wife of a heart-disease survivor talks about care giving in the family; and the representative of a major health advocacy organization discusses preventive measures at the community and government level.

MARIACHI VARGAS DE TECALITLAN. World-renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán headlines this year’s ¡Viva el Mariachi! Festival. In its 22nd edition, this is the longest-running mariachi festival in California and will take place on February 22 in Fresno’s Civic Center. Pepe Martínez Sr., musical director of Vargas de Tecalitlán since 1975 and author as such mariachi classics as “Violín Huapango,” talks about Mexican sones, the more than one hundred years of Vargas de Tecalitlán history, and the group’s plans under the current fifth generation.

ALSO, JOSE ANGEL PESCADOR. Former Mexican consul Jose Angel Pescador Osuna talks about his bid to run for the governorship of the northern state of Sinaloa under a broad coalition of opposition parties. Interviewed in a recent visit to Los Angeles, Pescador also discusses the reasons of his disaffection with his former political party, the officialist Revolucionario Institucional.

In this exclusive interview, Puerto Rico's born Orlando Figueroa, director of the Mars Exploration Office at NASA, gives news about Spirit and Opportunity, the robotic rovers that are currently exploring the red planet's surface. Figueroa talks about the discovery of old water, the prospects for life, the future visits by humans and the future of NASA's space program.

ALSO, SPEAKER FABIAN NUÑEZ. Freshman lawmaker Fabian Nuñez was sworn in as speaker of the California State Assembly, becoming one of the most influential politicians of this powerful state. In this interview, Nuñez talks about his support for Propositions 57 and 58, driver's licenses for the undocumented, and his relationship with Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ALSO, BRACERO DESPERATION. Veteran braceros leader Ventura Gutierrez, of Alianza Braceroproa, gives his version on the events that led hundreds of demonstrators to trespass grounds of President Vicente Fox's ranch in Central Mexico. The protesters are urging President Fox to address their claim for savings funds owed by Mexico since the 1940s. The leaders of the demonstration at Fox's ranch face a federal probe and possible criminal charges.

¡VIVA EL MARIACHI! FESTIVAL. Radio Bilingüe’s 22nd ¡Viva el Mariachi! Festival, the longest-running mariachi fest in California, will be celebrated in Fresno on Sunday, February 22. This program features conversations with leaders of two performing bands.

MARIACHI IMPERIAL. Formed in 1968 in Morelia, the original members brought together the tradition of two families: los Rodriguez and los Moreno. In the mid-seventies, Mariachi Imperial and Mario Rodriguez came to the U.S. Since then, the 13-member group has performed in Southern California and Acapulco. In 2000, Imperial recorded its second CD album entitled Mariachi Mambo y Más, followed last year by the CD entitled Asereje.

ALSO, MARIACHI TENOCHTITLAN. This ensemble was organized in 1996 in Fresno, with experienced members of other mariachi groups. Blending traditional mariachi sounds with modern choreography and entertainment, Tenochtitlan has performed throughout California, Arizona and Las Vegas.

Meantime, her health is rapidly deteriorating and she is anxiously waiting in Houston for a heart donor and public donations for her increasing bills.

ALSO, FRANK DEL OLMO: IN MEMORIAM. Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Frank del Olmo died of a heart attack. He was associate editor and columnist for the Los Angeles Times and was an influential voice for Latinos in California. Julio Moran, director of California Chicano News Media Association and a former reporter/staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, remembers del Olmo as a leader quietly dedicated to help others open the doors of the media and announces a new scholarship for young journalists named after del Olmo, a founder of CCNMA. Dr. Mercedes Lynn de Uriarte, professor at University of Texas, Austin, formerly with the Los Angeles Times, credits del Olmo with improving the news coverage and editorial perspective of Latinos by mainstream media.

ALSO, IMER AND RADIO BILINGUE. An interview with Dolores Beistegui, executive director of Instituto Mexicano de la Radio, Mexico's largest public broadcast system. Beistegui announces a ground-breaking agreement with Radio Bilingue to interconnect audiences across the border. She also announces the upcoming launching of a radio station that is expected to reach wide audiences along the Texas-Mexico border.

President Fox is expected to submit the bill to Congress in early March. Will the bill have support from congressional leaders and émigrés groups? Will émigrés be able to participate in the 2006 presidential elections?
