PREP CLASSES. A study of three large school districts in California found that students of color are still having a harder time to enroll in college prep classes. This program included an interview with Carlos Bartolomeo Vazquez, a popsicle vendor in Los Angeles who is facing deportation after being interrogated in connection with his filming of a federal building in downtown Santa Ana. Spector-Calderon also comments on a federal judge decision preventing the U.S. from deporting a felon legal resident unless the interests of his child are first considered.

FARM WORKERS UNION. Latino farm workers have a higher risk for leukemia and brain and stomach cancer than other residents of California, according to a study by the United Farm Workers of America. The union blames toxic pesticides and fertilizers for these diseases. This and other topics are discussed with the national secretary/treasurer of the union, Tannis Ibarra.

HEALTH EDITION – SLEEP DISORDERS. Sleep disorders such as apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy are responsible for millions of auto accidents a year. Dr. Aaron Márquez is designing a “sleep IQ” screening test to help agencies identify and treat drivers with sleep disorders.

IMMIGRATION REFORM. This is a radio message by Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Chicago) calling on Republicans to join the Democrats in pushing for federal reforms to ensure family unity among immigrant residents.

THE WAR ON TERRORISM. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell announced plans for military action to overthrow Iraq’s president Saddam Hussein. Listeners are encouraged to call in with comments. A message by President Bush is followed by editorial commentary.

FARMACIAS VIDA. The U.S. government announced that consumers who import products bought in Tijuana from Farmacias Vida would face penalties. The Bush administration included that pharmacy chain in a list of businesses suspected of ties with the drug-trafficking Arellano cartel.

The program discusses efforts by community-based organizations to promote awareness in barrios and labor camps on issues such as children with asthma, teen pregnancies, STDs and industrial pollution problems. How do they manage to reach out to and improve services for low-income communities in times of financial constraint? Promotoras in Salinas share advice on preventing agricultural chemicals and dust at home to tackle asthma triggers. In Los Angeles, promotoras get mothers and daughters to play and talk about sexuality and HIV. In San Diego and Tijuana, they educate neighbors on the hazards of toxic maquila waste and advocate for corporate responsibility and government regulations on industrial pollution.
