DIABETES AND DEPRESSION. Depression is a frequent complication of diabetes and people with depression may also be at greater risk of developing diabetes. People with both diabetes and depression tend to suffer from diabetic complications, because a depressed person may lack the energy or motivation to take care of their illness. The problem is, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated among diabetics. Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, a renowned expert on mood disorders, provides advise for those in need. Dr. Aguilar-Gaxiola is a psychotherapist and an academic researcher for California State University, Fresno.

JÍBARO HASTA EL HUESO. The sound of música jíbara, music from the mountain farmers, is a symbol of cultural and national pride for Puerto Ricans. And Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution, has put together an album entitled Jíbaro hasta el Hueso, which showcases some of the best Aguinaldos and Seises from the Caribbean island. On time for the holidays, Línea Abierta features an interview with the album's producer and label's director Daniel Sheehy.

MEDICARE REFORM: THE DEBATE CONTINUES. Congress passed a bill that overhauls Medicare, the government health care program for the elderly. The plan includes a prescription drug discount card and options to choose private insurers. In separate interviews, Dr. Cristina Beato, the Secretary of Health's main advisor on public health, defends the bill, and Rep. Ciro Rodríguez (D-TX), chair of the U.S. Congressional Hispanic Caucus calls it the demise of health services for low-income elders.ALSO, GOV. RICARDO MONREAL. An interview with Gov. Ricardo Monreal, who represents Zacatecas, a state with one of the largest Mexican émigré populations. Monreal was invited to attend the recent inauguration for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and expresses concerns about the presence of immigrant-hostile voices within the incoming administration in California.

WELCOMING PAISANOS. In this premiere edition, Radio Bilingüe joins Sistema de Radio y Televisión Mexiquense in a live simulcast to interconnect audiences in the U.S. and the state of México. Radio Mexiquense, a four-station network, broadcasts from Toluca, the state capital, reaching migrant communities throughout the state and most of Mexico City. This edition focuses on local and state activities to welcome U.S. residents who return home for the holidays. Listeners on both the U.S. and Mexico are encouraged to call in.

LATINO DAY OF BOYCOTT. On the day of The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Latinos throughout the state of California closed their shops, and boycotted work, stores and schools to protest the repeal of a state law that would have allowed driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. The boycott also sought to show the key role Latinos play in the state economy. This news report features interviews with store owners and workers, parents and students who honored the boycott.

FREE TRADE: TEN YEARS LATER. On the eve of NAFTA’S anniversary, this is a conversation with David Bacon, a seasoned journalist from California, on his book “The Children of NAFTA.” Bacon gathers firsthand accounts on the harsh impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement on Mexican workers who labor in the agricultural fields and maquiladora factories on the border. Also, veteran journalist Sara Lovera, executive director of Mexico's CIMAC news agency, comments on the impact of NAFTA on women and farming Indian communities in the impoverished South.ALSO, ZAPATISTAS: TEN YEARS LATER. On January 1, 1994 a ragtag army of Indian rebels from Chiapas rose up in arms against the Mexican government. Known as the Zapatista National Liberation Army, the group has become the most outspoken voice of Indian Mexico. Contributing reporter Lénica Avila was in San Cristóbal de las Casas during the uprising and shares her memory and insights on the event. Also, free-lance journalist Sandina Robbins, who filed stories of the first days of the conflict for Radio Bilingue, reminisces about her special coverage in the Chiapas highlands.
