VERB CAMPAIGN. Health-care organizations that launched a social marketing campaign called VERB say that children are more engaged in physical activities related to this effort. The anti-obesity multicultural campaign seeks to help kids see physical activity as fun, cool and part of everyday life. ALFREDO FIGUEROA. Veteran community chronicler and activist, Alfredo Figueroa comments on a court victory in his efforts to stop construction plans of a power plant in the banks of the Colorado River and other topics. Alfredo Figueroa is the founder of Escuela de la Raza Unida and KERU Radio and an advocate for the conservation and preservation of local natural and historic legacy.

ALSO, WAL-MART REJECTED BY VOTERS. A ballot measure by Wal-Mart, the world's largest corporation, to build a giant supercenter in a city of Los Angeles failed. Inglewood voters rejected the measure. Listeners comment on the issue.

JUNK FOOD ADS FOR CHILDREN. Food marketers target children of color promoting sodas, junk foods and high-calorie snacks. These kids are also targets of ads promoting TV, movies, videogames and other passive activities, according to a study. Dr. Elmer Huerta, a regular commentator, listens to two hip-hop and rock-and-roll tuned commercial spots for well-known fast-food chains and beverage brands and discusses remedies. He provides practical advice for parents and advocates for regulating commercial ads of junk foods for kids.

MAESTRO PEDRO DIMAS. This is an interview with violin virtuoso and composer Pedro Dimas, a Purepecha Indian from the Patzcuaro Lake shores in Western Mexico. He visits California along with his string ensemble with the mission of helping keep alive the old sones abajeños and sonecitos from the Michoacan heartlands. 

ALSO, MAESTRO PEDRO ORTEGA LOZANO. In this conversation, maestro Pedro Ortega, a craftsman of traditional papel picado from Mexico City, talks about his life-long love for colors and how bright colors in Mexican folk arts reflect Mexicans joy of life. Ortega visits California to exhibit his papel picado decoration works as well as demonstrate his creative craft before live audiences.

MÉNDEZ VS. WESTMINSTER. Seven years before Brown vs. Board of Education, the historic anti-school segregation ruling that celebrates 50 years, there was Méndez vs. Westminster. The Méndez, a farming family from Southern California, succeeded in suing the White-only schools of Westminster for denying their kids admission to elementary school. On the anniversary of this historic decision, this program features a live conversation with Sylvia Méndez, who at the age of eight years old was turned away in Westminster.

SELF ESTEEM FOR MIGRANT KIDS. Farm working, migrant kids are reportedly afflicted by the same emotional disorders that plague youth in the cities. Some college programs are aggressively addressing problems of self-esteem among students who grew up as migrant children. This program reports on how the College Assistance Migrant Program, of Fresno State University treats youth with low self-esteem, depression, and substance abuse.

BIOTECH GIANTS. This is a pre-taped conversation with Ignacio Chapela, a professor of microbial ecology at the University of California, Berkeley. Chapela is widely renowned because of his studies on transgenic corn contamination in the Mexican heartlands. Chapela comments on the animosity and pressures he has received in connection with his criticism against the biotech giants. 

ALSO, GOLDMAN PRIZE AWARDEES. An Afro-Colombian civil rights activist and a Peruvian environmental rights leader are honored this week in San Francisco with the Goldman Environmental Prize, the "Nobel Prize for the environment." This is a conversation with the honorees, Colombian social activist Libia Grueso Castelblanco and María Elena Foronda Farro, a critic of industrial contamination in the coastal communities in Perú.

U.S. AND LATIN AMERICA IN TIMES OF WAR. This live broadcast from KUNM in Albuquerque explores contentious issues of foreign policy and immigration impacting U.S. and Latin American ties as a result of the war against terrorism. Radio journalists from around the continent will meet over the phone with special guests to discuss those issues. This special program is part of the activities at the annual conference of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. Broadcast via satellite by about 150 stations throughout the Americas, this is the first live collaboration between community stations in the U.S. and South America. 

Guests: Attorney Jose Angel Gutierrez, founder and former director of the Center for Mexican American Studies and associate professor of political science at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a leading Chicano civil-rights activist during the 60s and 70s.

IMMUNIZATION WEEK. Health authorities and activists from around the nation join efforts to remind parents and communities that over one million U.S. children are not adequately immunized. While Latino children take their vaccines just like any other kid, they lag behind in shots such as diphtheria, tetanus and varicella. This program is aired in collaboration with the National Alliance for Hispanic Health.

IMMIGRATION EDITION. Attorney Carlos Spector-Calderón comments on recent developments in the immigration law area. Spector-Calderon also answers listener calls on immigrant rights and citizenship procedures. Topics include the failure of a Proposition 187-like initiative to qualify for the ballot in California and the new increases to application and petition fees announced by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

ORGANIC AG IN MEXICO: A SIMULCAST WITH WESTERN MEXICO. Mexico exports fine organic farming products while consuming pesticide-sprayed fruits and vegetables. Environmentalists also say that to safeguard human health, Mexico needs to move from policies that support large-scale agribusiness to policies that encourage fair and community-oriented agricultural practices. A high Mexican ag official responds to these charges. This is a simulcast with XEJB, Radiarte in Guadalajara, Mexico.

HIDDEN CASUALTIES OF THE WAR. Latino soldiers tested positive for radiation after returning from the war in Iraq. Doctors suspect they were exposed to depleted uranium, a metal used in U.S. shells and tanks. Congress members have been invited to comment on these consequences of the war and measures to provide medical care for these veterans. This is a live simulcast in conjunction with “Nuestra Voz,” a weekly program of KPFK in Los Angeles.
