Sara Shakir of Radio Bilingüe wins the 2007 Rubén Salazar Journalism Award for best radio story

Fresno, CA. Radio Bilingüe’s Sara Shakir has won the Rubén Salazar Journalism Award, a prize of the California Chicano News Media Association that recognizes exemplary journalistic work published or broadcast in California and contributes to a better understanding of Latinos. Shakir was honored in the Radio category for her story about drinking water problems faced by rural families.

Shakir, along with awardees from print and television organizations, will receive the prize at CCNMA’s Anniversary Gala on June 1 in Los Angeles. The feature report named for the 2007 award tells the story of neighbors in rural Central California towns who struggle with problems of groundwater contamination, the policies of the system of water control, and grassroots efforts to have access to affordable, clean water.

The two-segment story is part of a multi-year radio series with a special focus on the environment. It aired originally on Noticiero Latino, a groundbreaking Spanish-language radio news service that distributes two weekday and a weekend edition to 92 stations across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

Noticiero Latino is a production of Radio Bilingüe, the Latino public radio network. Based in Fresno and San Francisco, the network distributes news,
information and musical programming to affiliate stations in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. Radio Bilingüe also has a live audio service online at www.radiobilingue.org.

Funding for Radio Bilingüe’s award-winning news service is provided in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the James Irvine Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the California Community Technology Foundation, The California Endowment, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr Fund.
