Radio Bilingüe to Broadcast Two Live Shows from New Orleans
San Francisco, CA. Radio Bilingüe is presenting a live broadcast and
webcast from the 32nd Annual Community Radio Conference in New Orleans to
discuss life in this city for the thousands of workers who are helping rebuild
the
devastated city after Katrina.
The two-hour session will be aired from the site of the radio conference
on Thursday, April 12th from 12 to 2 PM PDT. The radio professionals attending
the event will be invited to stand in at the live broadcast.
The programs will air on Línea Abierta, the first and only Spanish-language
talk show in national public radio. This is the schedule:
Thursday, April 12, 12:00 PDT.
REBUILDING NEW ORLEANS: MIGRANTS HEED THE CALL Tens of thousands of new migrant workers have arrived at the Gulf Coast region after Hurricane Katrina to help rebuild New Orleans. This is a construction contractor bonanza. Yet, migrants are reported to live in abandoned cars, get poor wages, and under the fear of police or immigration agents detention. This live broadcast from New Orleans brings to the airwaves the voices of reconstruction workers, migrant and union organizers, Katrina survivors, and other guests.
13:00 PDT
NEW ORLEANS: A HEALTH CARE WALL Latino migrants who do the dirtiest work and live in substandard conditions while helping rebuild New Orleans face serious threats to their health. There is a wall of distrust and marginalization separating them from traditional health safety net agencies. Is there any emergency response service for this growing population? What are doctors and clinics doing to break down the wall? Leaders of New Orleans’ Latino Health Action Network will be among the guests. Línea Abierta airs on 56 stations in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The talk show series is a production of Radio Bilingüe, the Latino public
radio network with main offices in Fresno and San Francisco. Through Satélite Radio Bilingüe, the non-profit organization distributes news, information and musical programming to affiliates throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and México. Radio Bilingüe also has a live audio service online at www.radiobilingue.org.
