Línea Abierta airs live from Tijuana, destination for the uninsured and the migrants

San Francisco, CA. Radio Bilingüe’s flagship service Línea Abierta goes on the road again and will broadcast live two special programs from Radio Tecnológico in Tijuana to celebrate the anniversary of this partner station. Línea Abierta is the first and only network Spanish-language talk show on U.S. public radio.

These programs are also to celebrate seven years of launching the first broadcast of Línea Abierta for the Tijuana/San Diego area. To mark the ocassion, Línea Abierta will broadcast the following special editions:

On Monday, June 12, a roundtable will feature Tijuana as a destination point for U.S. uninsured families. Hospitals, pharmacies and clinics are being developed near the international gate in an attempt to meet the growing demand from self-medicating patients and beneficiaries of cross-border insurance plans. Who are those patients and what keeps them coming to Tijuana?

On Tuesday, June 13, XHITT’s birthday, seasoned journalists and writers from the border area will be invited to comment on issues related to Tijuana as a high tech hub, internationally-known border crossing point for migrants, and contested ground in national Mexican politics.

The one-hour-long programs will go live in the U.S. on the national public radio satellite system at 12:00 noon Pacific Daylight Time. They will also air live in the Tijuana/San Diego area for a potential audience of nearly three million Spanish-speaking residents.

Radio Tecnológico began airing Línea Abierta seven years ago. In 2002, the Tijuana station also partnered with Radio Bilingüe in the production of a special series to attract Mexican-American kids and women to careers in science and engineering. The series featured a Nobel-winning scientist, an astronaut, a Purepecha mathematician, and others.

Radio Tecnológico is an educational station owned by Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana, the region’s highest educational institution. The station celebrates 19 years providing cultural programming to audiences in Tijuana, Tecate, Rosarito, and San Diego.

Radio Bilingüe ownes six full-power radio stations in California, serving the Central, Salinas and Imperial valleys and the Mendocino county area. In addition, through its satellite service Satélite Radio Bilingüe, the Latino public radio network with headquarters in Fresno and San Francisco, CA, distributes news, information and cultural programming to affiliate stations around the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico. Radio Bilingüe also have a live audio service online at www.radiobilingue.org.
