Young people are bombarded daily with messages of what they should and should not do—and often these messages contradict one other. It's natural, then, for young people to tune out when adults try to give them advice. Teen Talk Health Reports gave young people the opportunity to consult with one another on the issues they think are most important and play a central role in supporting community dialogue and debate.
KUBO and Clínicas de Salud del Pueblo staff trained a group of seven to ten youth to produce quality radio pieces, including researching health issues; interviewing health experts, youth inmates, teachers, counselors and other teens; and reporting on issues such as sex, drug addiction, alcoholism, youth violence and mental health.
The youth reporters, with help from KUBO's production team, are producing 23 Youth Health Reports. Each health report aired six times on KUBO. In addition, the station produced one roundtable discussion for teens and other contributors to the Youth Health Reports to discuss health issues and take calls from listeners. KUBO also worked to expand participation of youth from Mexicali, Mexico.
Clínicas de Salud del Pueblo, which has worked closely with KUBO before, acted as a resource and advisor for the youth reporters. In addition, Clínicas de Salud Del Pueblo and KUBO worked together on a number of community outreach events to generate dialogue in the community. Activities included high school presentations about the project, health fairs and other community events.
Typically, the community views youth as individuals who require supervision in order to avoid problems. Youth are seen as objects of change and it's the responsibility of adults, as the experts, to dominate and guide that process. The Teen Talk Health Reports project represents a new paradigm that rebalances strategic approaches to communications and change by placing the overriding emphasis on youth as agents of their own change.
