Radio Bilingüe received national recognition for its continuing work in promoting public awareness about the benefits of immunization.

The 2003 Excellence in Immunization Award was delivered on July 31, 2003, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., by David A. Neumann, executive director for the National Partnership for Immunization, and Dr. Walter Orenstein, director of the National Immunization Program for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The other media honorees were Parade magazine and Reuters news service. According to organizers, the recognition is for organizations that are making a difference in their communities with respect to improving public health through immunization. The Media Award recognizes "creators of print, broadcast or electronic media stories that present information encouraging timely immunization to prevent disease."

Upon receiving the award, María Eraña, managing producer of Línea Abierta, Radio Bilingüe's nationally-syndicated news and talk show program, said: "Disease prevention is a top priority for our news and information services. And overcoming barriers to vaccinate Latinos has been a frequent topic on our radio service."

Radio Bilingüe is the national Latino public radio network. With national offices in San Francisco and satellite uplink transmitters in Fresno and Salinas, the non-profit network distributes news, information and cultural programming to stations in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. Radio Bilingüe's health news desk is a thriving source of information with a special emphasis on Latino consumer education and citizen participation.
